The Olympic games were held in Olympia near Peloponnese.

In the ancient Olympics, like today, they used a stadium. They also used a Hippodrome and had many other buildings for the games. A new stadium that was 192 meters long and 35 meters wide was built around 350 B.C.E. for the Olympic games. The stadium was very nice. It had a river around it for the people to cool off in. There was also piles of earth around the stadium, so the spectators could go on top of the mounds and watch the games from a great view. About 20,000 spectators could watch. This stadium was often used for running races. There was also a Hippodrome for chariot racing and riding. Hippodrome means "horse track". The Hippodrome is very similar to
horse tracks today because of the similar stalls that held the racers and their horses. Like today when the race began they would open the stall for the horses to run out of. The Hippodrome was about 200 meters wide and 600 meters long.
Other buildings that were used were the bathhouse, the swimming pool, the palaistra and the gymnasium. The athletes were very into cleaning themselves after training. In the bathhouse they had steam rooms, which I find quite interesting because they are just like our saunas today. The swimming pool was used for training and getting stronger, not for the games. The palaistra was very useful. It was used for training such as jumping and fighting

events. There were 19 rooms in this building. Some were used for powder and oil for the athletes, others were used as washrooms, common rooms or more training rooms. The gymnasium is basically like the palaistra, but bigger and mostly for discus and javelin training. More buildings involved in the Olympics were the banqueting hall, a priests house, a house for special visitors, and there were A LOT of temples.
